Casual vs. Hardcore

Me and some co-workers had good discussions recently on the definitions of being a "casual" or a "hardcore" player.

One of the factors that came up in the 'definition' was the amount of time one dedicated to a game. All things being equal, a casual player plays less than a hardcore one. But what if that same player "who plays less" spends insane sums on F2P item-mall based games? Does that make the player now hardcore?

Some say it's the gaming "mentality" that defines casual or hardcore. Casual players are those who just go inside the game and just chat, play occassionaly and usually just buy items for mundane reasons ("it's cute... wow!"). They never bother to rise above the others or become leaders. By this definition, the hardcore 'school' are the ones who are always concerned about levels, items and kills and play like there's no tomorrow.

Perhaps Bartle sums it best in his definition of online gamers. He made a study about personalities and defines 4 basic types of online gamers:

  • ACHIEVERS tend to prefer collecting points, levels, treasure and accomplishments that set them apart from other players--or simply present challenges.
  • EXPLORERS tend to enjoy finding all of the unique areas of the world, often enjoying the immersion of the experience. Finding a place with unique monsters and seeing what those monsters do is usually more fun for an Explorer than defeating the monsters themselves.
  • KILLERS prefer the player-versus-player aspect of any game more than anything offered by the environment. They often relish the adrenaline and challenge of pitting themselves against real players.
  • SOCIALIZERS enjoy interacting with other people, forming organizations, and finding cooperative solutions to the challenges within the virtual world.
I just took the Bartle test and here are my results:

Breakdown: Achiever 26.67%, Explorer 73.33%, Killer 26.67%, Socializer 73.33%

SEAK
players are usually very interested in the the 'total experience' of a virtual world--meeting other people and finding the unique places within it. They don't care much for PVP or levelling, but meeting up with online friends to see new parts of the world is usually fun and exciting.

What type or gamer are you? Take the test now and let me know. Thanks.

i took the same test and it was just right on the bat!! :D

my results:

Achiever 86.67%
Explorer 60.00%
Killer 33.33%
Socializer 20.00%

i said right on the bat because i have been known among my very small circle of friends to just go alone and explore a new map and achive first what others finds hard... not much of a killer though, both in PVP and WoE, since all my characters except for one are weaklings...

what do you call that?? casual or hardcore?? hhmmmm??

well, you can't have everything... /no1

Here's my resulut...

Breakdown: Achiever 73.33%, Explorer 40.00%, Killer 66.67%, Socializer 26.67%

AKES players like to be the best-of-the-best at everything the game has to offer. They like to be high on the ladders of whatever metrics the game uses, including PVP. They like the best gear, the most power, and they love being the 'first' at something. Their prowess in PVP is generally supported by a large degree of understanding and posession of the best equipment and skills.

-- I find the Bartle test so cool and really precise. I'll surely tell my friends to take the test for themselves. Great test! I really enjoyed taking it. Thanks for sharing, sir. ^_^

Breakdown: Achiever 40.00%, Explorer 40.00%, Killer 33.33%, Socializer 86.67%

SAEK players enjoy socializing more than anything else, but they also like to achieve the goals within the game. Often, the increase in social status that comes with defeating a powerful foe or finding a unique treasure is more important than the achievement itself. They also enjoy being part of a team that tries to accomplish great deeds, often finding as much satisfaction in the success of the group as with oneself.

I am EKSA.
Explorer 66.67%
Killer 66.67%
Socializer 46.67%
Achiever 20.00%

EKSA players might be descibed as living by slogan: see the world, meet interesting people...and kill them. Immersion within the world is important to these players, because they love finding new things to explore--but they also enjoy the thrill of the hunt and finding other players within the world to fight.

I am one of those guys who do not relate gear=skill; it's more like gear=time spent playing to me.It is in reality based on luck or hard gold grinding, not actual playing skill. So it's more like a handicap/modifier. a good car engine doesn't mean it has a good driver.

Usually when a game is new i get immersed in the world, the art design and style. after that initial infatuation, i get interested with team based gameplay and tactics, be it PvP or PvE.

very accurate test!

agreed! the results are pretty accurate. although there are some questions in the test that i feel are quite hard to answer or choices that are hard to choose from...i dunno...maybe its just me...maybe im not too "hardcore" that i have to find "neutral" choices in the test...anyways here are my results >>

Breakdown: Achiever 66.67%, Explorer 73.33%, Killer 40.00%, Socializer 20.00% << quite true, as i am mostly a soloist

EAKS players often live by the phrase 'The journey is often more enjoyable than the destination.' They are motivated by meeting the challenges of the world, but they are usually in no rush--because seeing the creatures and places of the world is even more fun.

My result:

ASEK players like to pit themselves against the grand-challenges of a virtual world. They see grouping and guilds/clans not only as an enjoyable aspect of the social environment, but also as a way to achieve goals that cannot be achieved as an individual.

The arrangements of the categories are straight-on. Whereas my little brother is the "Hoy, PVP tayo! Asa, ka amf" type, I am the complete opposite. Too bad it doesnt say anything about roleplaying though.

This type of player will often enjoy PVP that focuses on their skill as an individual contributor (duels, and so forth) more than team-based PVP.

this really makes sense for me because I spend a lot of time wandering around when I play a game. I often get into trouble because I'll wander into an area that has high level monsters and I end up running away as fast as my virtual legs will take me back to the nearest portal. I like to know where everything is in the game. I'm not so much interested in beating other people or getting lots of rare items. I like to talk to people, but I'll often go off by myself just to look at the scenery.

I think I'm more of a casual gamer. I get bored really easily with mmorpgs, probably because you never actually "finish" the game, and it's more of a time waster than anything else for me.
