The Art of Whining
I don't think there's a game forum, company, developer or blog that's SPARED from the incessant whining of players.
Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against whiners...
Ok...Ok... I'm a bad liar. I am irritated by them.
Here's a collection of web "shorts" about the "Art of Whining" in MMORPGs. Let's call this GM T's shortlist:
Disclaimer: These are NOT my personal opinions or the opinion of Level Up. I'm simply showing you the various reactions of people and organizations out there to the subject.
1. Yahoo Answers: Why are gamers such impatient whiners?
Of course, this does not apply to everyone who plays video games. I myself speak in proper English, am not homophobic, racist, particularly stupid and/or ignorant, nor do I complain if a game is not released on time. A lot of gamers are a few KB short of a megabyte, so to speak.... they are not exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer when it comes to intellect, cultural knowledge, or just plain decorum. But for every rude and immature gamer you find, you will find at least one mature, intelligent, and conscientious gamer if you look hard enough.Ok... that wasn't so cruel... let's move on:
2. Next stop - GamerAndy:
How many of you are programmers or developers? How many of you know your favorite game's code inside and out? Very few, that's what I figured. Then why in the hell do you have to constantly bash companies when they don't do things in what you think is a timely fashion. These people worked hard to get the games in your hands and there are going to be bugs, it's the nature of the beast. The countless hours of overtime that they worked on a game and spent away from their families and friends in order to get it to you just goes unnoticed to the majority of you. You want to bitch and moan about what YOU want while treating these workers like their lives are insignificant when compared to yours. It's ok to state the problems with a game but when you start calling names and telling people how to do their jobs when you are clueless on how it's done, that's just ridiculous. Do you really want some guy off the street coming into your place of work and telling you that you're doing it wrong or not fast enough?
3. Great Marketing Slogan for a (card) Game: Funagaingames.com
NOT FOR WHINERS
Most of those who don't like this game, can be divided into two categories. (1) People who don't have the ability to make mid- game adjustments, and (2) Those who think the cards aren't "cool-looking." So if either of those trump your ability to enjoy a game, don't bother, this game isn't for you. This game still requires skill, it's just a different kind of skill.
("Amen"- GM T)
4. One dude is fed up - Darkfall Forums
I am so sick of people whining for restrictions on reality because something bad happened to them, i.e. someone took their stuff. Its not real stuff!!! If you dont enjoy playing, if you see it as 'work' to acquire these things, then how stupid are you? They arent real things!! Its a game! So now everyone makes games where you cant do anything against the rules, so all you can do is kill the NPC monsters. What fun is that? I can NOT kill other people in the real world! The whole point in playing a game is to be able to act out things you cant do in the real world. I cant wait to play your game and kill and loot anyone who pisses me off, and I cant wait to conquer some cities with groups of allies.
5. Online Gamers Are Girls? - Comment on why 64% of online players are women:
maybe they mean 64% of all gamers act like women. Some people just whine too much about stuff that’s really not worth whining about.6. Lastly, from my own blog, here:
its already 6pm.. Friday April 13?? come on! you said you'll annoounce it today... wala talaga kayong sense of time!
That's it so far for this long post.
The morale of the story?
Again, let me quote it from GamerAndy
I say when a developer makes a good to great game that has its issues there really isn't need to bitch. If they fix said issues, then we as gamers should be thankful that they took the time to fix what wasn't working instead of just ignoring it altogether.
Peace!

It's the noobs who mostly whine.
It's called frustrated noob syndrome. Seen it everywhere. RO, GW, RF, MU, WOW, RYL, even gunbound LOL. They can't compete with real gamers so they complain and blame management.
"GM tolong nio pow aq. Na huck aq. Dami kasi scummer wla kyo gngwa"
"waaaaah na scum aq"

There should be an IQ test or something before people are allowed to create accounts.
speaking of GamerAndy , hows the korean nguy named Andy @ level up musta na kaya siya.. miss him na lolz XD

kaya ang sarap ng feeling pag nakaka encounter ng player na marunong rumespeto at mabait sa mga GMs eh.
Parts of point #2 (in particular, the working hard to release a game) is arguable, and debated in some game forums (by non-whiners). For instance, it is a known fact that many of the personnel in game development play games within work hours. Also, some games, despite their very complex engines (I think Condemned is one example) are finished, polished, 100% ready by release day, because the dev team totally focused on work. Just wanted to point out some possible debatable points in your post.
Other than that though, yeah, I also hate whiners. Especially those who blame GMs for stuff they have absolutely no control over. Well, them and the guys who whine about a game sucking just because the original Japanese voice-overs were not present in the final product.
going to wear the horns again as always...just to keep things interesting...
agreed there are people who whine without reason, but there are actually people with substantial negative feedback, don't you agree?
would you like it if people just quit without a snippet of complaint?
from Dealing with Irate Customers!*&%*&*
Leaving customer complaints unresolved is costly, especially since consumers gladly share their unhappy experiences with others... Unsatisfied complainants ... vent their righteous indignation to nine or 10 people. Over time, too many unhappy customers will ruin your business.
...“existing customers generally are worth five times more than new customers” because it costs more to attract new customers than to keep them...
... never squander unique opportunities to convert irate customers into loyal customers and goodwill ambassadors.
...Don’t take it personally. ... irate customers are not necessarily mad at you, they are angry at the situation.
i know GM's have a hard time but that's kind of expected. and i really think feedback, especially negative ones contribute a lot to improving your service.
just my 2zenys
Thanks for the feedback, Levin. Yes, I agree that *listening* to your customers is critical, if not crucial, to maintaining good relationships and keeping them in the game.
It's a two-way street, though. Trust that our custcare people are trying to compile suggestions on how to improve the service as well as cut back on the red tape to immediately resolve issues.
Of course, in any organization, the Customer is first and is the reason why we are here in the first place
I have stumbled upon this article in Ragnaboards. I just wish I have read your article sooner. Oh well. Better late than never.
Sorry, I don't agree with you. You cannot expect a disgruntled customer to be in your shoes. On the contrary, it's the other way around.
BTW. Regarding item #5 in your article, I'll give you two words for it: sexist and chauvinistic.
What's more disappointing is some kids justifying and applauding your chauvinistic ideas.
when you work hard yourself, it's hard not to complain services you get.
doctors get sued, engineers and others lose their licenses. you, sir, just get 3 days earful of disgruntled customers for a service they paid to receive with prepaid money. no lost license, no lost money.
you're a whiner yourself, whining about whiners. :)
i never expected you to go down to the level of the whiners you complain about so much.
i don't think you've made the sort of commitment these 'whiners' have made to the game.
i don't think you've spent thousands of pesos of allowance (or worse, hard-earned money) on a hobby.
i don't think you've gone beyond your Filipino penchant for mediocrity that you've decided to take it upon yourself to bash the people who, albeit in a uncouth and unsophisticated manner, point out deficiencies in the service you provide to your public.
i don't think you've ever gotten off your high horse long enough to see the game from a players' viewpoint. how could you? you're an executive of the company. they pay your bills so it's only fair for you to "toe the company line", right?
and finally, i don't think you've ever seen anything from a woman's point of view. your generalizations are inane and characterize you as someone who hasn't moved beyond primary school when it comes to sensitivity to gender issues.
always keep in mind that for these whiners that you're so quick to lump into one box and treat with disdain, there are many, many exceptions.
and perfect world, you're wrong. i believe they should administer an EQ test before people are allowed to create accounts. maybe you should take one yourself.
moral po, di morale... hehe ^^
